In the trailer, Wang Zhantuan (played by Ge You) shares his daily life, showcasing a unique state of mind: he prefers to revel in his own world rather than be bogged down by mundane concerns. Having served as a naval officer and a submariner, and having traveled across all five oceans, Wang Zhantuan recounts his "heroic" tales with pride. However, the paper boats floating by seem to suggest that these stories are more products of his imagination than reality. Inspired by the flying fish described in "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," Wang Zhantuan is fascinated by their ability to soar through the air. His nephew Xiao Zhou (Li Dingxu) questions whether fish can truly fly, prompting Wang Zhantuan to attempt a flight of his own by attaching a large scallion to himself and leaping from the roof. Despite crashing to the ground, this peculiar act reveals his belief that humans too possess the potential to take flight. This whimsical leap into the unknown resonates deeply with Zhou Zheng (Wang Junkai), forging a bond between their kindred spirits.

"The Hedgehog" is adapted from Zheng Zhi's short story "The Immortal Disease." The film tells the story of Wang Zhantuan, labeled a "madman," and Zhou Zheng, a stuttering teenager, two outcasts who find solace and understanding in each other. Following his "Era Trilogy," director Gu Changwei once again turns his lens towards those marginalized by society, exploring the question of whether one should conform or remain true to oneself in the face of a monotonous existence.

Unlike the tender and poignant storytelling of the "Era Trilogy," "The Hedgehog" presents a bold and defiant answer through the characters of Wang Zhantuan and Zhou Zheng, asserting that there is nothing wrong with being true to oneself in this fleeting life. With Ge You and Wang Junkai portraying these unlikely soulmates, their on-screen chemistry extends beyond the film, as they affectionately refer to each other as "Uncle-in-Law" and "Zhou Zheng" off-screen.

During filming, Ge You spontaneously asked Wang Junkai to sing, to which Wang Junkai responded with a shy wave of his hand while holding a microphone, but then found himself singing along instinctively. This spontaneous interaction captures the essence of the deep bond shared by these two misfits, a bond that has been thoroughly ingrained in both the characters and the actors themselves.
